CREATE · EXPERT INSIGHT
From a social media video to his own tufting studio.
TOMISLAV · MAGIC TUFTING STUDIO
HOW IT STARTED
Tomislav's first encounter with tufting wasn't planned. A few years ago, he came across social media videos showing rugs being created with a special gun and yarn. A few videos were enough for curiosity to turn into a desire to try the technique himself.
First curiosity. Then research.
At the time, tufting was an entirely new world to him. He began researching the equipment, materials and technique, followed by buying his first tools.
Like many activities that look simple when we watch them on a screen, the reality was different. He had to learn how to use the tufting gun correctly, how to stretch the fabric, how to control the lines and which materials worked best.
Learning came with mistakes. There were unsuccessful attempts, repetition, testing different materials and significant investments in equipment.
That process gradually transformed his initial curiosity into a serious interest — and eventually into Magic Tufting Studio.
Tufting isn't something you have to know before you begin. You learn it by picking up the tool and giving it a try.
TOMISLAV · MAGIC TUFTING STUDIOFrom the first line to the finished piece.
Tufting combines technical work with a creative process. It requires patience and precision, while still leaving plenty of space to choose your own colours, shapes and designs.
The result isn't something that remains only a practice exercise. At the end of the process, you have a real object — a rug or decorative textile piece that you made yourself.
That moment when a design on stretched fabric becomes a finished piece is one of the things that makes the process particularly satisfying.
FOR BEGINNERS
What does Tomislav recommend for your first try?
You don't need previous experience to try tufting. It's much more important to give yourself time to get comfortable with the tool and not immediately choose the most complicated design you can find online.
Choose a first design with clear outlines and fewer tiny details.
Getting a feel for the tufting gun takes time. Your first few lines don't need to be perfect.
The more time you spend working with the tool, the easier it becomes to control lines and details.
